Look for a story on Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in Monday's Gazette by R. Scott Rappold. Officials and friends of the fossil beds want a new visitor center and research area to assist visitors and researchers and to protect the 6,000 fossils stored there.

The planned new visitor center will also expand collections space, making it possible for the park to increase its collections and subsequently perform more research and have a larger pool of fossils from which to make exhibits. The current collections space (in addition to other issues) is almost full, which limits the park's ability to make large collections for scientific research.
The 6,000 items figure actually includes historical and archaeological artifacts as well as modern plant and insect specimens for comparison and archival materials related to the history and science of the park. The fossils do form the majority of the collection, however.
