Gold in the hills

Made it back from sultry Savannah in time to make a quick loop around Cripple Creek/Victor to see the aspens Sunday. If the wind doesn't blow every leaf off the trees today this weekend should be another great one for the color show.

We hiked around the mining area and took the free tour that was offered by the City of Cripple Creek. It went up into mining land. John, the guide, was a hoot.

He mentioned in passing that a three-legged bear the locals had named Tripod was shot and killed near Mueller in recent weeks. Said she bled to death after multiple small-caliber gunshots. What a waste.

Anyone get great photos from high country? I was up there midday and the light was poor. If you do, e-mail 'em and we'll share.

So was that a case of poaching? What is someone doing shooting her with a small caliber weapon?

I hadn't heard a word about it till Sunday. The guide said officials thought they knew who had done it but couldn't prove anything.

Sounded totally malicious. The other people taking the tour all seemed to know the bear, who apparently had 2 cubs.
