Musher DeeDee Jonrowe, 53, dropped out of her 25th Iditarod Monday at the Rainy Pass checkpoint after a series of nasty falls on the trail (she broke a finger and may have suffered other damage to a hand). She placed 4th last year.
Jonrowe was the second of the Iditarod’s best and most experienced veterans to scratch from the 1,100-mile race from Anchorage to Nome. Four-time champion Doug Swingley, 53, of Lincoln, Mont., withdrew Monday after being injured in a spill on a slick and icy hill a few miles before Rainy Pass, just two days into the race. Race officials said he may have broken ribs. Swingley said he didn’t think he could properly care for his dogs. He scratched from the 2004 race after frostbiting his corneas when he took off his goggles when the wind chill factor was 90 below zero.
Rick Swenson, the Iditarod’s only five-time champion (competing for the 31st time), said he was doing "poorly" this year.
Teams at the front of the pack today are making the 80-mile run from Rohn to the village of Nikolai on the Kuskokwim River.

is there drug test req. for the mushers
I'll send a question in to organizers. All I can see on the site is a form mushers sign that if a drug test comes back positive for "the team" they agree to give back any prize money. Doesn't say whether the musher is part of the team.
