Oh deer

So this morning, I'm still in the shower and Porter-the-incredibly-silent-dog just starts going apesheet. And I figure it's somebody walking by, but no, it goes on and on.

So I get out of the shower and go look out and there's a deer that's been hit by a car lying on the side of the driveway. What was really sad was that three other deer were there and they kept going up to it and nosing it.

I called the Humane Society who told me to call Division of Wildlife who weren't in yet so I had to call the State Patrol who called Wildlife who were apparently on their way 'cause they gave me a call about the time I got to work.

Anyhoo, should this happen to you - and 'tis the season - you call the DOW Pueblo office at 719-561-5300, or, after hours, the State Patrol at 719-544-2424. Note that if the poor thing is already dead, you call Colorado Springs Public Works instead. They have a guy.

That's 385-5934.

When a squirrel climbed up the pipes and got caught in my toilet (true story), who should I have called? I ended up shutting the lid, putting something heavy on it, and calling the landlord to take care of it.

Roto Rooter? Awesome story - I would just have flushed it a few times.

My advice in that situation is to run out into the middle of Nevada Avenue crying and screaming and then call your husband and ask him what to do. Then continue freaking out.

Why would you call the DOW Pueblo office and not the Springs regional office?

By the way here's a link to all DOW numbers for reference - http://wildlife.state.co.us/About/OfficesAndPhone

As usual, Zen had something practical to add. I came upon a dead deer on Manitou Ave. during a visit. Went into the nearby vet's office to ask them who to call. They didn't have a clue. Went to the house and started calling. If that large cat rescue place can get to it within the first hour, they said they can use the carcass for food. Beyond an hour, it becomes too contaminated to risk feeding the cats.

'cause the Humane Society told me to call the Pueblo DOW.

I went home for lunch, BTW, and the deer had disappeared. I assume the DOW officer patched it up and sent it on its way...
