With temps nearing 60 you may feel drawn to local trails. Please send updates of conditions. I'm curious about Palmer Park. After weeks of staying off the Intemann Trail for weeks, imagining it was icy and muddy, we walked up Sunday afternoon for a look-see. We strolled the section between Pawnee and Ruxton avenues. (The IT runs along the hills on the south side of Manitou Springs.)
Most of the trail was dry, though there is snow in parts. Less ice than I imagined. The photo shows the worst part of the trail. A short stretch of nearly dry mud. Should get better as the week progresses. We didn't go up Red Mountain, which looked muddy, nor head east from Pawnee - lots of area in shade, so we suspected mud.

We spent some time on the sunny parts at the top of Palmer Park yesterday (the dog run), and it was dry and gorgeous. We didn't brave any of the shadier areas.
I did the Incline and got to the top a little after 4. The top 100 yards was very icy. There was lots of ice on Barr Trail. Probably earlier in the day it was slush. When I left the parking lot to start the Incline, people were standing in the parking lot watching all the people falling on a couple icy spots. I think while I was changing clothes and getting my stuff together nearly a half dozen fell even though some of the spectators were yelling at them to be careful.
Thanks for the tip on Palmer Park. Sounds like a great place to head before/after work this week (considering I'm still here at 6:50 p.m., maybe BEFORE work is best).
Rob, I saw folks slipping around the Barr parking lot, too. Maybe with YakTraks...
We went up the pass to snowshoe today. Schubarth Trail/Road is crummy. Road is impassable beyond Farish and snow has deteriorated a lot. We then went up to Horsethief Park, where we found excellent snow conditions, deep and soft when we ventured off the trail in the trees.
Excellent tip. Social obligations will keep us near the homestead this weekend, but we might be able to slip away for a few hours shoeing in the trees. Thanks!
I had my YakTraks with me on Sunday but never put them on. If the really icy section at the top of the Incline had been any longer I probably would have. I also kept considering using them on Barr Trail but would get to a non-icy section before I'd decide to stop and put them on.
