First teams cross finishline in Primal Quest

After five days, the first and second places in the 417-mile Primal Quest adventure race were decided by less than 45 minutes at dawn this morning.

The favorite, team Nike, which is made up of racers from Boulder, Vail, and Summit County, came in first after leading the pack for much of the race. GoLite, a team plagued by problems the whole race, powered through their setback for an amazing second-place finish. Team Merrell/Wigwam has not crossed the finish yet, but is in place to finish third. Colorado team Salomon/Crested Butte is in position to take 5th, a huge victory for them; they placed 10th in the last Primal Quest and have been sitting around 15th for most of the race. They told me at the start that they would play conservative and make their move in the mountains near the end. I guess they meant it.

Colorado team Spyder, is in 9th place right now, plagued by fatigue and bad feet.

We'll see if there are any last-minute surprises in the top ten as they roll in this morning.
