Colorado State Song, continued

I think we need to broaden our debate about the Colorado state song beyond "Rocky Mountain High." There are a lot of other 70s songs that talk about Colorado.
Bob Seger - Get Out of Denver

Reo Speedwagon - Riding the Storm Out

Joe Walsh - "Rocky Mountain Way"

Ozark Mountain Daredevils - "Colorado Song"

Stephen Stills - "Colorado"

How about: Me and My Uncle by the Grateful Dead?

  2. REO Speedwagon are already the gods of everything. Do they need a state song too?

I do like "Rocky Mountain Way" though it never mentions Colorado. Neither does "Riding the Storm Out". Pretty much all the others are virtual unknowns to much of the nation. "Rocky Mountain High" stands head and shoulders above the rest.

But if the whole so-called anti-developer aspect irritates your raw conservative hide, then check out the equally beautiful "Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado" by (again) John Denver.

  5. But oh my dear
Our love is here to stay
Together we're going a long long way

In time the Rockies may crumble
    Gibraltar may tumble
    They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

The Gershwin brothers penned this beautiful song, "Our Love is Here to Stay," which makes passing reference to Colorado.

So does John Hiatt in "Circle Back:"

Cross the high plains of Kansas
    To the Colorado line
Spent a lot of sleepless nights 'Round the campfire
They had mountains on their minds

    Those high plains people
    They're different somehow
You spent your life leaning into a hard wind
    I guess you're less likely to take a bow . . .

    Love those last two lines

If we're going to dip into folk, how 'bout that song "Take this Hammer." At least in the Doc Watson version, the lyric says.

"It's a long way, from east Colorado
    Honey to my home,
    Honey to my home,"

Referencing the Rockies is not a passing reference to Colorado.

The Rockies run from northern British Columbia to southern New Mexico.

  10. I love Rocky Mountain High. When I first heard it I lived in California and have always thought of it as a Colorado song.
